The Story Behind Too Much Punch for Judy New product

The Story Behind Too Much Punch for Judy £21.99

Too Much Punch For Judy has become one of, or perhaps even, the most performed contemporary play, having been performed 5936 times to date (May 2013) and seen by over half a million people in licensed performances since it was first shown in a 30 seat school drama studio in 1987.

'The audience I sat in was patently out for some whooping Friday night fun watching their mates on stage. At the end there was a horrid silence.'
Nick Baker; Times Educational Supplement from the first Epping Youth Theatre Production.

This verbatim play has become an established exam performance and study script for GCSE, Btec, A' level, University and Drama Schools. Messages from students studying the play and asking questions about its background sparked Mark Wheeller's initial interest to write this book. He has discovered the Story behind this play is quite a story.

This beautifully illustrated book includes a detailed (and humble) background to the play. it exposes the dreadful real life sequel to the events depicted in this documentary play. It includes a many ideas for teachers and students on how to stage the seemingly impossible scene of the accident. There are improvisation ideas that Mark used with his cast when developing the early performances and will help get the best out of any cast.

Finally there is an exclusive new prologue, framing the original play in a totally different light with this question:
'Can this play still change attitudes to drink driving when the person who committed the actual offence went on to the same thing again?'

There is a new and improved Bob and Nob scene. Both scenes are featured in the award winning Oasis Youth Theatre production released on DVD in July 2013 which will be on sale here in July. If you have an interest in Too Much Punch For Judy then you are sure to have an interest in this book.

'This book is both insightful and informative on the story behind Mark Wheeller's play Too Much Punch for Judy.  As a teacher of Drama I can thoroughly recommend this to other teachers, students, practitioners and those who are interested and follow Mark's work. The play continues to be timeless and it is fantastic to see that after 25 years there is a resource that will benefit both teacher and student in staging the play and interpretation and what better person to help you with these ideas than the playwright himself. As with 'Drama Schemes,' by Mark Wheeller, the book is very accessible, well laid out and an engaging and insightful read. I hope you enjoy reading about the journey and process of this story as much as I did.'
Olivia Murphy - Drama and Performing Arts teacher - Bitterne Park School, Hampshire

Mark Wheeller has over 30 years teaching experience, charted in his 2010 book Drama Schemes. Edexcel list his plays as amongst the most popular in GCSE Drama exams. Mark lives with his wife, Rachael in Southampton. He is a Drama Teacher and Youth Theatre Director at the Oasis Academy Lord's Hill.
